GOVERNOR DAVID IGE ANNOUNCES MAJOR CHANGES IN THE STEWARDSHIP OF MAUNA KEA

Governor Ige thanked the Thirty-Meter Telescope (TMT) team for halting construction to allow him to listen to and learn from those with differing points of view on the issues surrounding the project. During the timeout, the governor consulted with the University of Hawai‘i, TMT officials, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Native Hawaiian lineal and cultural descendants, the Department of Land and Natural Resources, and individual supporters and opponents of the project. Wastewater Overflow Occurs inside Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility

The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported that a wastewater overflow of approximately 4,000 gallons occurred on Friday, May 22, 2015 at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility on N. Honoapiilani Highway. The overflow was caused due to a mechanical failure at the plant headworks building. The overflow started at 9:30 a.m. and was stopped by 9:45 a.m

Haiku Road Culvert Replacement and Kokomo Road Pavement Reconstruction

The first is the Haiku Road Culvert Replacement Project, which will begin on Monday, May 11, 2015, at 6 a.m. This project will repair the existing drainage system under the roadway as well as make road improvements and repairs. Because of the nature of the work Haiku Road will be shut down completely although motorists will still have access to Fukushima Store and Haiku Marketplace from Kokomo/Haiku Road

Deadline to notify the county about refuse cart selection is May 15

County officials are reminding residents that the deadline for property owners to submit their refuse cart size selection to the Solid Waste office is Friday, May 15. Existing customers who wish to keep their 96-gallon carts do not have to notify the county of their selection.

The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL), is extremely concerned about the hazardous waste left behind by its prior tenant, Save Oahu’s Race Tracks LLC (SORT), and has worked diligently to determine the extent of the problem and the best methods of cleanup. DHHL has hired appropriate experts to assist it in this regard and has been keeping Department of Health (DOH) apprised of its efforts. DOH understands that this problem was directly caused by DHHL’s prior tenant SORT which operated a motorsports race track known as Kalaeloa Raceway Park.
