Wastewater Overflow Occurs inside Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility

WAILUKU, Maui, Hawai‘i – May 28, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — The County of Maui’s Department of Environmental Management reported that a wastewater overflow of approximately 4,000 gallons occurred on Friday, May 22, 2015 at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility on N. Honoapiilani Highway. The overflow was caused due to a mechanical failure at the plant headworks building. The overflow started at 9:30 a.m. and was stopped by 9:45 a.m.

Wastewater flowed from the headworks building to the adjacent grassy area at the facility. The entire spill was contained within the wastewater treatment plant. The County wastewater plant crew cleaned and disinfected the affected area. The spill did not reach any waterways; no beach closures are required. The State Department of Health has been notified.
