Deadline to notify the county about refuse cart selection is May 15
Last phase of automated trash collection to roll out in July
LĪHU‘E – May 6, 2015 – (RealEstateRama) — County officials are reminding residents that the deadline for property owners to submit their refuse cart size selection to the Solid Waste office is Friday, May 15.
Existing customers who wish to keep their 96-gallon carts do not have to notify the county of their selection.
Customers can choose between a 64- and a 96-gallon cart for their automated curbside refuse collection. These options are available to existing customers who currently have 96-gallon carts as well as to the 9,000 residents around the island who will begin to receive the automated service come July.
Along with the start of the automated refuse collection, the schedule for rubbish pick-up for many residences on Kaua‘i may change.
For details about the schedule changes, go to www.kauai.gov/refusecollection.
Beginning July 1, when the Pay As You Throw (PAYT) ordinance takes effect, refuse collection fees will be based on the refuse cart size that property owners select:
96-gallon cart (equivalent to 3 standard trash cans) for $18 a month.
64-gallon cart (equivalent to 2 standard trash cans) for $10 a month.
Property owners that opt out of the automated service, choosing instead to take their trash directly to a transfer station or the Kekaha Landfill, will have to pay a base fee of $6 per month.
The county’s Solid Waste staff have begun door-to-door delivery of the new refuse carts that are specially designed for automated trash pick-up, and expect to complete the delivery by month’s end. Customers that are new to the automated service should not use these refuse carts until the automated pick-up begins. A brochure explain explaining how the program works is attached to each cart.
To facilitate the distribution of the refuse carts, residents should ensure that their street address is clearly marked on their home and visible from the street.
The cart deliveries are scheduled as follows:
Saturday, May 9 and Sunday, May 10 – Kalāheo
Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 – Lāwa‘i to Po‘ipū
Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24 – Anahola to Kīlauea
Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 – Princeville to Hā‘ena
Anyone with questions can call the Solid Waste Division at 241-4841 or visit their website, www.kauai.gov/refusecollection.
