The Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (DHHL) will hold statewide public hearings for Hawaii Administrative Rule (HAR) amendments. The proposed amendments to Title 10, Hawaii Administrative Rules, Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, cover several topic areas which include the use of DNA testing to help establish familial relationships for the application process and successorship designation, subsistence agriculture lots, the transfer of homestead leases to undeveloped or vacant lots, and undivided interest, fees and charges for the use of department facilities, rule making procedures, and various administrative, technical, and grammatical changes.
Three (3) bridges along the Mohihi-Camp 10 Access Road in the Na Pali-Kona state forest reserve will undergo construction to replace them, starting Monday, November 7, 2016 through May 31, 2017. The Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) today was granted a quarantine order by Maui Circuit Judge Peter T. Cahill that prohibits the movement of plant material and personal property in outdoor areas on a Maui property infested with little fire ants (LFA). Earlier this month, HDOA obtained a warrant to access the property at 82 Loomis St. in Haiku after the tenant continually refused to allow LFA eradication crews to survey and treat the area

The U.S. Senate today approved the extension of a package of veteran health and benefit programs, which includes the Keeping Our Commitment to Ending Veteran Homelessness Act authored by Senators Mazie K. Hirono and John Boozman (R-AR) to renew a number of important veteran housing programs. Without action, these programs, which served over 600 Hawaii veterans in 2015, would have expired on September 30. The package also includes Sen. Hirono’s bill, S. 3246, which renews authority for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Regional Office in Manila, Philippines, keeping it open for business
Gov. David Ige announced today that more than 400 homeless individuals will be served over the next two years through the state’s new Family Assessment Center. The Family Assessment Center (FAC) is the converted maintenance shed, adjacent to Kaka‘ako Waterfront Park. It will temporarily house homeless families while they are being connected to services and long-term housing by Catholic Charities Hawai‘i’s social service specialists.
The Hawaii Department of Agriculture (HDOA) obtained a court-ordered warrant and entered the property of a Maui resident who has continuously denied access to the property that was suspected of being infested with little fire ants (LFA). LFA were detected in the Huelo neighborhood in early 2015 and surrounding properties have been under treatment to eradicate the stinging ants. With the warrant, HDOA Chairperson Scott Enright and department pest control personnel were able to survey the 1.75-acre property on Monday, Sept. 12 and found LFA infestations in potted plants and kalo patches.
Aging infrastructure and a reluctance to leave a lifetime of memories behind had homesteader Darleen Kaniho living in uninhabitable conditions for several years in her childhood home in Papakōlea.
