2015 SUBCOUNTY AND 2015 HOUSING UNIT ESTIMATES RELEASED FOR HAWAII

The release contained subcounty population estimates from 2010 to 2015. Urban Honolulu Census Designated Place (CDP) is the only subcounty area in Hawaii estimated by the Bureau on an annual basis. Housing unit estimates for the state and all its counties are also available.

Real Property Tax Sale Set for Tuesday, June 7

The County of Maui Department of Finance announced it will be holding a real property tax sale on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 and will continue the sale on Wednesday, June 8, 2016 if necessary. The sale will auction off properties that have been delinquent for three or more years and have received their final notice of tax sale.

COLLEGE STUDENTS DELIVER 49TH MODEL HOME TO KEAUKAHA HOMESTEAD ʻOHANA

A home built by students in the Hawai‘i Community College (HawCC) Model Home Program was dedicated today in the Hawaiian homestead community of Keaukaha. Hawaiian Home Lands beneficiary Elton “Tui” Suganuma is the new owner of the three-bedroom, two-bath home in Keaukaha, Hilo, Hawaiʻi. Elton was joined at the home dedication ceremony by his wife Patricia, and his son Poʻai, who along with his growing ʻohana will call this place home.

$3 Million In New Funding For Affordable Housing

U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) today announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded $3,000,000 in new funding from the National Housing Trust Fund to Hawai‘i for the development and preservation of affordable rental housing. The funding will be available only to households with incomes at or below 30 percent of area median income and will be allocated through the Hawai‘i Housing Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC).

Hawaii Delegation Announces $20 Million Clean Water Research Grant for University of Hawaii

Hawaii’s Congressional Delegation announced that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded a $20,000,000 grant to the University of Hawaii System for a clean water research project. The project, titled Ike Wai from the Hawaiian words for knowledge and water, will address the critical needs of the state to maintain its supply of clean water, most of which comes from groundwater sources.

Governor David Ige announced his administration’s proposal to amend DHHL’s operating budget request for fiscal year 2017 from $9.6 million to $23.5 million in general funding, $17.8 million provided directly to DHHL and $5.7 million to Budget & Finance to cover fringe benefits for DHHL employees. The Governor’s message also included a recommended level of $17.1 million in general funds to reimburse DHHL for administrative and operating expenses paid in FY 16, the current fiscal year, with departmental resources including special and trust funds. This comes following a court order to make sufficient sums available to DHHL for its administrative and operating expenses.

Governor proposes highest level of funding ever for Department of Hawaiian Home Lands

Gov. David Ige is proposing a funding plan that is consistent with the State Constitution requirement to provide sufficient funding for administrative and operating expenses for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands (article XII, section 1).
