Would-be thieves thwarted

LĪHU’E, HI – March 17, 2009 – (RealEstateRama) — An attempted burglary at a Līhu’e business was prevented last week due to security measures that were recently taken by the building owners.

Sometime between March 8 and 9, unknown suspects apparently broke the black metal gate off its hinges leading to the back doors of businesses in the Senda Building on Rice St.

The suspects then tried to enter the Gold & Silver Trading Co. but were unable to gain entry through the metals doors that were recently installed by the building owners.

“We’re pleased that these burglars were unsuccessful in accomplishing their objectives,” said Lt. Kaleo Perez, Līhu’e district commander. “Taking steps to prevent property crime like the owners of the Senda Building did is something I encourage all businesses as well as individuals to do. Although there are costs associated with upgrading the security of a business or a home, it is well worth the investment.”

Some of the key advice on property crime prevention offered by the Kauai Police Department includes:

a) Don’t keep a lot of cash on hand.
b) Form alliances with neighbors to keep an eye out for each other such as the Neighborhood Watch Program.
c) Close and lock your windows when no one is at home or in the car.
d) Replace windows that cannot be locked securely.
e) Install metal or solid wood doors with metal plates around the handle and hardware to thwart prying of the locks.
f) Install alarm and video surveillance systems.
g) Install security lighting and motion sensors.
h) Be vigilant and alert to what’s happening around you.
i) Be aware of anyone who might be “casing” your home or business for a future break-in.
j) Report any suspicious activity to the Kaua‘i Police Department, 241-1711, or Crime Stoppers, 241-1887.
