Pictorial exhibit spotlights Community Development Week

-

LĪHU‘E – April 22, 2014 – (RealEstateRama) — In recognition of April 21 to 25 as National Community Development Week, the County Housing Agency is having a pictorial exhibit at the Līhu‘e Civic Center, Pi’ikoi Building.

The public is invited to stroll through the breezeway to view the exhibit and learn how the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) programs make it possible for Kaua‘i organizations to sponsor activities or programs that meet the needs of the community.

Information on how to apply for and utilize the CDBG and HOME funds is available next to the exhibit. Both programs are administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

“I encourage everyone to check out the exhibit and find out how the CDBG and HOME programs provide us with the opportunity to collaborate with community groups on a broad range of projects that benefit our residents,” said Mayor Bernard Carvalho, Jr.
Last week, the mayor issued a proclamation stating his support for these federal programs and celebrating National Community Development Week.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the CDBG program, which awards grants to states, cities and counties for projects and public service activities that provide housing and economic or social opportunities for low- to moderate-income residents.

Some of the local organizations that recently received CDBG funding include: the Boys and Girls Club; Easter Seals Hawai‘i; Habitat for Humanity, Inc.; Kaua‘i Economic Opportunity, Inc.; Love the Journey; Women in Need; the YMCA of Kauai and the YWCA of Kauai.

The HOME Program assists counties with locally designed housing projects, such as Kalēpa Village, Pa‘anau Village, and the Rice Camp Senior Housing.
