Oct. 1 is Deadline to Apply for County Tax Credit and Home Exemptions

The City and County of Honolulu reminds homeowners that Monday, Oct. 1, 2007, is the deadline to apply for real property tax relief programs for Tax Year 2008-2009. The programs are:

  • County Tax Credit
  • Home Exemption
  • In-lieu of Home Exemption

Mayor Mufi Hannemann said, “While most homeowners are familiar with the home exemptions, many may not be aware of the county tax credit, which is in its second year and must be applied for annually.

“I urge county tax credit applicants to immediately start gathering the required documents and make copies for submission with the application.”

In applying for the county tax credit, taxpayers who filed a 2006 federal tax return must submit copies of:

  • 1. Federal tax return transcript or Federal tax account transcript
  • 2. Form W-2 – Wage and Tax Statement
  • 3. Schedule B – Interest and Dividend Statement
  • 4. Schedule C – Profit and Loss from Business
  • 5. Schedule D – Capital Gains and Losses
  • 6. Schedule E – Supplemental Income and Loss
  • 7. Form 1099-R – Distributions from Pensions, Annuities, Retirement of Profit Sharing, IRA’s
  • 8. Form SSA-1099 – Social Security Benefits Statement
  • 9. Form 1099-DIV – Dividends and Distributions
  • 10. Form 1099-G – Certain Government Payments
  • 11. Form 1099-INT – Interest Income
  • 12. Form 1099-Misc – Miscellaneous Income

Taxpayers who did not file and are not required to file a 2006 federal tax return must submit copies of:

2006 State Tax Return with all Attachments and Schedules

Form W-2 – Wage and Tax Statement

Form SSA-1099 – Social Security Benefits Statement

Form 1099-DIV – Dividends and Distributions

Form 1099-G – Certain Government Payments

Form 1099-INT – Interest Income

Form 1099-Misc – Miscellaneous Income

Form 1099-R – Distributions from Pensions, Annuities, Retirement of Profit-Sharing, IRA’s

Copy of 2006 Bank Statements

Documentation of other income

To apply for the county tax credit, or to get assistance, please contact the City’s Current Collections Section, Department of Budget and Fiscal Services, 530 South King Street, Room 115, or call 523-4856. Applications and instructions are available at the Division of Treasury, all satellite city halls, and on-line at http://www.honolulu.gov/budget/treasury_division.htm. Homeowners applying for the home exemptions are required to provide proof of age for all applicants, such as driver’s license, state identification, birth certificate, or other government or legal document.
