2015 HOUSING PLANNING STUDY GATHERING DATA
The Hawaii Housing Finance and Development Corporation (HHFDC) is partnering with SMS Research to conduct a phone survey to gather data on housing supply and demand. The phone survey began the week of October 19 and will be taken over the next 3 months.
GOVERNOR’S COORDINATOR ON HOMELESSNESS ANNOUNCES PROGRESS IN HELPING INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES FIND SHELTER
Scott Morishige, Governor David Ige’s coordinator on homelessness, announced today that a total of 48 people who had been living in Kaka‘ako (including eight families, three couples and five singles) have moved into shelter in the past week. Individuals and families were primarily placed at the Institute for Human Services, Next Step Shelter and the Lighthouse Emergency Shelter.

HAWAI‘I HISTORIC PLACES REVIEW BOARD ADDS 12 PROPERTIES TO HAWAI‘I REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES
The Hawai‘i Historic Places Review Board has added 12 properties to the Hawai‘i Register of Historic Places. Properties are eligible for inclusion in the register because of their association with broad patterns or events, or individuals important in the history of Hawai‘i. They are usually significant in architecture and design, are likely to yield important information, and their features retain their qualifying integrity.
CONTEST ASKS STUDENTS TO BE CONDUCTORS OF CHANGE IN HAWAII’S RENEWABLE ENERGY FUTURE
Lawmakers are calling on students to amp up their brain power and share bright ideas to make Hawaii a renewable energy leader in the second annual Hawaii: Next 50 Contest. All Hawaii students in grades 4 -12 are invited to create an essay, poster or video submission that answers the question, “Over the next 50 years, what can I do to help Hawaii reach its 100 percent renewable energy goal?”
Appointments Being Taken for Philippine Consulate Outreach this Weekend
The County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns, Immigrant Services Division, announced that the public is invited to reserve an appointment during the Philippine Consulate Mobile Outreach on Maui this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015. The outreach will provide on-island services for Philippine Passport Renewal, Dual Citizenship and Authentication.
Hirono & Boozman Introduce Legislation To Keep Veterans Housing Programs Alive
Senators Mazie K. Hirono and John Boozman (R-AR), members of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, introduced legislation Thursday to authorize federal homeless veteran programs for the next fiscal year. The Keeping Our Commitment to Ending Veteran Homelessness Act would reauthorize seven Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Labor programs for the next fiscal year.
2014 AMERICAN COMMUNITY SURVEY 1-YEAR DATA
The U.S. Census Bureau released income, poverty, health insurance, housing and other data from its American Community Survey (ACS) for 2014 today. The Census Bureau releases 1-year data for areas with a population size of 65,000 and above. About 2% of Hawaii’s population were surveyed during 2014. Click here for Hawaii data
HAWAI‘I CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION ANNOUNCES $2.1 MILLION TO ASSIST HOMELESS VETERANS IN HAWAI‘I
Today, the Hawai‘i Congressional Delegation announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded $2,118,174 in two grants under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program to help curb veterans’ homelessness in Hawai‘i.
SNAKE FOUND IN PEARL CITY HOME GARAGE
Honolulu police captured a two-and-a-half-foot-long* snake yesterday in a garage at a Pearl City home. Residents of the Kaweloka St. home called police in the early evening and police called the Honolulu Zoo, which called an agricultural inspector. In the meantime, officers captured the snake, which was identified as a non-venomous ball python and took it to the Pearl City Substation.
