Appointments Being Taken for Philippine Consulate Outreach this Weekend

The County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns, Immigrant Services Division, announced that the public is invited to reserve an appointment during the Philippine Consulate Mobile Outreach on Maui this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 3 and Sunday, Oct. 4, 2015. The outreach will provide on-island services for Philippine Passport Renewal, Dual Citizenship and Authentication.

Hirono & Boozman Introduce Legislation To Keep Veterans Housing Programs Alive

Senators Mazie K. Hirono and John Boozman (R-AR), members of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, introduced legislation Thursday to authorize federal homeless veteran programs for the next fiscal year. The Keeping Our Commitment to Ending Veteran Homelessness Act would reauthorize seven Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and Department of Labor programs for the next fiscal year.

2014 AMERICAN COMMUNITY SURVEY 1-YEAR DATA

The U.S. Census Bureau released income, poverty, health insurance, housing and other data from its American Community Survey (ACS) for 2014 today. The Census Bureau releases 1-year data for areas with a population size of 65,000 and above. About 2% of Hawaii’s population were surveyed during 2014. Click here for Hawaii data

HAWAI‘I CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION ANNOUNCES $2.1 MILLION TO ASSIST HOMELESS VETERANS IN HAWAI‘I

Today, the Hawai‘i Congressional Delegation announced that the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded $2,118,174 in two grants under the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program to help curb veterans’ homelessness in Hawai‘i.

SNAKE FOUND IN PEARL CITY HOME GARAGE

Honolulu police captured a two-and-a-half-foot-long* snake yesterday in a garage at a Pearl City home. Residents of the Kaweloka St. home called police in the early evening and police called the Honolulu Zoo, which called an agricultural inspector. In the meantime, officers captured the snake, which was identified as a non-venomous ball python and took it to the Pearl City Substation.

LEADERSHIP TEAM ON HOMELESSNESS MAKING PROGRESS AS MORE FAMILIES LEAVE KAKAAKO

Another 13 people moved out of the Kakaako encampment on Thursday, September 3rd, bringing to 56 the total number of homeless campers who have transitioned from Kakaako to homeless shelters around O‘ahu since August 7, 2015

September Workshops at Maui County Business Resource Center Announced

The County of Maui Mayor’s Office of Economic Development today announced its free workshops for the month of September. Workshops are presented at the Maui County Business Resource Center, a County of Maui facility, located in the Maui Mall across Pizza Hut, in Suite B-9. Seating for all workshops is limited, and all workshops are subject to change or cancellation. Workshops are free unless noted otherwise.

David Ige today announced that Harold Brackeen III will join the homeless programs office on September 1 where he will assist with the administration of state and federal grants for shelters, outreach and other program activities. Brackeen is currently a program specialist with the department of human services, social services division. Prior to joining DHS, he was a housing director at Alternative Structures International and also served as a program coordinator with Hale Kipa, a program serving Hawai‘i’s youth

On August 10, 2015, Governor David Ige announced that Scott Morishige will join the administration on August 24th as the Governor’s Coordinator on Homelessness. Morishige will serve as the state’s point person for homelessness, which includes leading the Hawai‘i Interagency Council on Homelessness (HICH), staffing the Governor’s Leadership Team on Homelessness, and working closely with Director of Human Services Rachael Wong and the rest of the cabinet on its coordinated statewide plan
