Mayor Says No Property Tax Rate Increases Necessary for FY 2017

Citing higher property tax valuations this year, Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa said that he is proposing that the property tax rate in all categories remain flat this year, during his annual budget presentation before County Council members today.

HECO may restart 3 solar farms

HECO backed out of contracts with SunEdison Inc. for three solar projects in February because of SunEdison’s financial situation and failure to meet project milestones. Since HECO’s cancellation, D.E. Shaw group, a global investment and technology development firm, said it is committed to purchasing the projects so construction can continue and the 112 megawatts of solar energy can be online before the end of the year.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is pleased to announce a free public viewing of the Solar Impulse 2. The public will be able to view the aircraft and meet the crew that’s making the first flight around the world in a solar-powered plane. The viewing is scheduled at the following location and time

IMPROVEMENTS TO WAHIAWA FRESH WATER STATE RECREATION AREA IN PROGRESS

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of State Parks is making multiple improvements from March through November at the Wahiawa Freshwater State Recreation Area, on Walker Ave. Work will include the repair, repaving and striping of the park entry, roadways and parking areas; replacement of connecting sidewalks; renovations to the comfort station including a new foot rinsing area. The day use pathway will be replaced with a new concrete pathway; new and replacement picnic tables; and the construction of a new accessible picnic table and pathway in the upper parking area.

Location Changed for Philippine Consulate Outreach This Weekend

The County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns announced that due to the flooding at the Maui DMVL Service Center last week, the location for the Philippine Consulate Outreach has been moved.

HUD Secretary to Schatz: Hawai‘i Will Get ‘Fair Share’ of Federal Resources to Address...

During an appropriations hearing today, U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, called on the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Julian Castro, to recognize the need for resources to support homeless families in Hawai‘i and address the housing shortage. In response, Secretary Castro pledged that Hawai‘i would receive its “fair share” of federal resources and reiterated his commitment to addressing homelessness in Hawai‘i.

As a participant, Hawai‘i will focus on expanding Medicaid involvement in and support for the state’s housing and homelessness initiatives

Public Meetings of Maui Island Water Use and Development Plan Scheduled

Public input is requested on water issues and solutions to assist in preparing the Maui Island Water Use and Development Plan (WUDP). Public meetings are scheduled throughout Maui. The WUDP drafted several years ago is being redone to include all water users and water systems on Maui and to focus more attention on our ground, surface and alternative water resources.
