Hawai’i Eligible to Receive $21 Million in Homeland Security Grants

WASHINGTON, DC - December 9, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — U.S. Senators Daniel K. Akaka and Daniel K. Inouye announced today that Hawai‘i will be eligible to apply for more than $21 million in grants distributed by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for 2010.  DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano released the application guidance for the DHS grants programs today.

“Homeland Security grants strengthen Hawai‘i’s  partnership with the Federal government to prepare to respond to natural or manmade disasters,” said Senator Akaka, a senior member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.  “Hawai‘i is eligible for a number of funding opportunities to support state homeland security capabilities, which include enhancing protections for port and urban infrastructure, community preparedness, emergency communications, and more.”

“These funds will help our county police and state sheriffs protect our critical infrastructure and help maintain a safe environment for residents and visitors,” said Senator Inouye. “Hawai‘i is a historic meeting place for business, government, and social leaders from the Asia-Pacific region and our thriving visitor industry makes security one of the most important functions of government. With the 2011 APEC meetings headed for Honolulu, it is imperative that we support our law enforcement agencies.”                                                                                       

Hawai‘i is eligible to apply for several grant programs worth more than one million dollars each, including:

• State Homeland Security Program - the State will be eligible to apply for $6,613,200 to support its homeland security strategies in planning, equipment, and training activities;
• Urban Areas Security Initiative - the City and County of Honolulu will be eligible to apply for $4,754,800 to further improve homeland security capabilities of urban areas;
• Emergency Management Performance Grants - the State is eligible to apply for $3,299,583 to enhance its emergency management capabilities;
• Port Security Grant Program - the port areas in Honolulu and Barbers Point are eligible to apply for $3,082,600 to protect critical port infrastructure from attacks; and
• Regional Catastrophic Preparedness Grant Program - the State will be eligible to apply for $1,680,000 to enhance regional and community planning for emergency situations.

In addition, the State will be eligible to receive $748,800 from the Driver’s License Security Grant Program; $400,000 from the Buffer Zone Protection Program; $317,419 from the Metropolitan Medical Response System; $311,000 from the Interoperable Emergency Communications Grant Program; and $124,876 from the Citizen Corps Program.
