Hawaii to Receive $1.2 Million for Energy Efficient Home Appliance Rebates
Washington, D.C. - July 14, 2009 - (RealEstateRama) — Hawaii residents will be able to apply for $1,235,985 in rebates for the purchase of new ENERGY STAR qualified home appliances, U.S. Representative Neil Abercrombie announced today. The funding is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the economic recovery legislation passed by Congress in February.
“Home appliances consume a huge amount of electricity, so we can save energy and save families money every month,” said Representative Abercrombie. “These rebates will help families obtain more efficient appliances, and by encouraging such purchases nationwide, the rebate program will directly stimulate the country’s economy and create jobs.”
The new funding will be awarded to the state by the U.S. Department of Energy, using a formula established in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Each state is required to submit a plan that specifies which ENERGY STAR appliance categories will be included in their rebate program, the rebate level for each product type, how the rebates will be processed, and their plan for recycling old appliances. States must file an initial application expressing intent to participate by August 15, 2009, followed by a full application by October 15, 2009.
ENERGY STAR, a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Energy, helps consumers make energy efficient choices by identifying the most energy efficient products. It includes more than 60 product categories from 2,645 manufacturers of ENERGY STAR qualified products.
To date, Hawaii has received more than $46 million in federal economic stimulus funding for energy efficiency:

I would rather the state put this $1.2million towards modernizing the power grid, recycling system, and renewable energy implementation.
Rebate programs only benefit the applicable entrants and require a large chunk of change *simply to implement* the rebate program.
What does Energy Star mean, by the way? That an appliance is 25% more power-efficient than the government requirements. Sounds like the gov’t requirements are out of date.
